What is the hardest part of the B2 exam?
At B2, correct German alone is no longer enough. You need to structure ideas, develop arguments, respond to opposing positions and maintain an appropriate style in both writing and speaking.

Why is good grammar no longer enough at B2?
At B2, language is used as a tool. You need not only to know correct forms, but to use them to explain, compare, evaluate and argue.
This makes open tasks demanding: while speaking or writing, you are simultaneously deciding on content, sequence, suitable words, sentence structure and register. These processes need to become faster and more automatic through training.
Where do problems often arise in the B2 exam?
The exact task format differs between telc and Goethe. The basic language demands are similar, however: understand, select, formulate independently and respond under time pressure.
Argumentation instead of isolated sentences
A good contribution needs a clear and logical line of thought. Individual correct sentences do not yet make a convincing answer.
Responding in conversation
You need to pick up statements, respond to them and flexibly adapt or defend your position.
Writing under time pressure
Structure, formal or neutral tone and completeness all need to work despite limited time.
Understand nuances
In reading and listening, opinions and information are often expressed more indirectly. Synonyms and context become more important.
Why is grammar practice alone not enough here?
Grammar is important, but an exam does not always tell you which rule to use. When speaking and writing freely, you must decide for yourself how to express an idea. At the same time, you need to keep the task in mind, find suitable words and structure your answer.
That is why someone can do written grammar exercises very well and still feel unsure in an open task. Free language production needs to be trained just as deliberately as grammar.
The exam should not be the first time you have to respond freely.
In B2 training, you deliberately receive topics that you cannot memorise in advance. We train position, reason, example, counterargument and response. In writing, you work with a clear plan before the text and a short checking phase afterwards.
How is your specific exam structured?
The tasks differ depending on the exam provider. That is why there are separate pages explaining the telc and Goethe formats.
What is difficult at the other exam levels?
Brief answers
What makes B2 significantly harder than B1?
You need to argue with more nuance, understand more complex texts and adapt your language more closely to the situation and recipient.
Can I pass B2 with memorised phrases?
Useful phrases help with structure. What matters, however, is that you can use them flexibly with your own content and respond to new tasks.
How do I train B2 speaking?
Discuss topics from changing positions, justify your opinion and practise follow-up questions and counterarguments under time limits.
