Reading comprehension in the German exam

How do I improve my reading comprehension for the telc or Goethe exam?

In reading comprehension, you do not need to translate every text word for word. Successful candidates quickly recognise what information the task requires and where to find it in the text.

The most important rule: First understand the task, then solve it. In language exams, it is not only what you know about grammar that counts, but whether you can process information correctly and respond appropriately.

Should I read the entire text carefully first?

Not always. For many tasks, it is more efficient to read the question first and then read the text with a clear search goal. First skim the heading, opening and noticeable key terms. Then search specifically for the relevant passage.

Why do I find the same words in the text as in an answer and still get it wrong?

Because exam tasks test understanding, not just word matching. A wrong answer may repeat words from the text, while the correct answer expresses the same content differently. That is why you need to compare meaning and context .

Synonyms

The correct answer may express the same statement using different words.

Partly correct

An answer may fit one sentence but still fail to answer the whole question.

Negations

“not”, “no” or restrictions can completely change the meaning of a statement.

How can I read faster without losing important information?

Separate two ways of reading: when skimming you look for the topic and structure. When reading selectively you look for a specific piece of information. You do not need to solve every unknown expression if it is irrelevant to the question.

Save time: Understand the question, identify the keyword or topic, find the relevant passage, and only then read it closely.

What should I watch for in tasks with several conditions?

If a situation contains several requirements, all relevant conditions often need to match. So do not mark only one main word; mark the complete combination, such as time, place, target group and requested service. An answer can be almost right and still be wrong.

How do I train reading comprehension for the exam?

Practise not only texts, but also your strategy. After each task, you should understand why the correct answer is right and why the others are wrong. This helps you recognise typical distractors and paraphrases.

In the mock exam, we also train time allocation. The goal is to avoid spending too long on one difficult task and losing easy points at the end.

Mock exam

The exam should not feel new on exam day.

In exam training, we practise the task format, expected type of answer and time limits in advance. In the real exam, you can then focus on the language instead of first having to work out how the test works.

Frequently asked questions

Brief answers

Do I need to know every word for reading comprehension?

No. You need enough understanding to identify the relevant information and context reliably.

Should I translate unknown words immediately?

Usually not in the exam. First check whether the word is even important for the specific question.

What helps with time pressure when reading?

A fixed strategy: read the question, define the search goal, skim the text, read the relevant passage closely and, if necessary, return to difficult tasks later.
